Summary
Father Carlos Alberto Gutiérrez, 51 years old and a member of the Legionaries of Christ since 1999, has been elected as the new director general for the term from 2026 to 2032. He succeeds Father John Connor, LC. Gutiérrez was chosen at the recent general chapter of the congregation held in Rome and will continue the path of renewal initiated by the previous administration under papal guidance. A Chilean-born Mexican priest, he has served as a parish priest in various countries including Chile, Italy, Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico. Before being named director general, Gutiérrez had been an assistant for Regnum Christi’s youth ministry program in Santiago, Chile. His new mandate includes promoting evangelization to all people through transparency, care, and service within the congregation. The Legionaries of Christ is part of the larger Regnum Christi spiritual family which underwent significant reform after facing allegations of abuse by its founder Marcial Maciel. Currently, Gutiérrez’s chapter focuses on electing new councilors and administrators, as well as reflecting on the congregation’s mission.
