Summary
Passau Bishop Stefan Oster believes that a “Synodalkonferenz” will take place. In an interview with Passauer Bistumsblatt, Oster stated that although the successor project of the Synodal Way must still be confirmed by the bishops’ conference and Rome, he expects its implementation to occur. Oster did not say whether he personally supports it or not; however, in his diocese, he will establish a “Conversation in the Holy Spirit” method, which was demonstrated as inspiration for the Roman World Synod at the previous Synodal Way assembly. Oster, one of four critics who did not participate in the Synodal Assembly, attended last week’s full meeting in Stuttgart. In an interview, he continued to criticize Germany’s reform project. Pope Francis’ warning that there is already a Protestant church in Germany and no need for another was, according to Oster, understood “a little sloppily.” He also believes polarizations within the people of God, within the bishops’ conference, and between the Church in Germany and the World Church have intensified through the Synodal Way. Oster hopes that efforts can now be renewed towards unity. (DT/jra)
