Summary
A cordial and sincere meeting took place on February 12, 2026, at the Dicastero per la dottrina della fede. The Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Doctrine of Faith, met with Don Davide Pagliarani, Superior General of the Fraternità sacerdotale di San Pio X, under the benevolent approval of Pope Leo XIII. After clarifying certain points raised by the Fraternità sacerdotale di San Pio X in various letters sent particularly in 2017-2019 — including those on divine will regarding religious plurality — Cardinal Fernández proposed a specific theological dialogue, with precise methodology to address topics still lacking sufficient clarification such as the distinction between faith act and “religious obeisance of mind and will,” or different levels of adherence required by various texts from the Second Vatican Council (Cf. Concilium Iurisdogmatici, cap. I and III). The Cardinal also offered a series of topics outlined in a January 17, 2019 letter from Fraternità sacerdotale di San Pio X. The Holy See has emphasized that the ordination of Bishops without the Pope’s mandate would lead to a decisive breach in ecclesiastical communion (scisma) with severe consequences for the Fraternità as a whole. The Superior General of Fraternità sacerdotale di San Pio X will present his proposal to his council and provide a response to the Dicastero per la dottrina della fede. If accepted, they will agree on the steps, stages, and procedures to be followed. The entire Church is requested to support this path with prayer to the Holy Spirit during the next period of time.
