500th Anniversary of the Sacking of Rome: Commemorative Year for the Swiss Guard
The Swiss Guard is commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Sacking of Rome in 2027. In 1527, 189 Swiss Guards died protecting Pope Clement VII while 42 survived to escort him to Castel Sant’Angelo. The commemorative year will run from January 23, 2027, with a historical conference, and culminate in May 2027 with Vespers, a Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, and other events in Vatican City.
